Senate Bill 1968 — effective January 1, 2026
Every Texas broker needs this course now. Not just the ones with agents.
SB 1968 requires all brokers and broker applicants to complete the six-hour Broker Responsibility Course, whether or not they sponsor a single sales agent. Applicants must finish it before licensure.
If your last renewal came before the change, this is new to you.
Does this apply to you?
Required before — still required
- Brokers who sponsor sales agents
- Delegated supervisors
New under SB 1968
- Brokers who sponsor no one at all
- Associated brokers
- Anyone applying for a broker license — before licensure
In practice, that covers every active individual broker in Texas. If you’re unsure how it applies to your situation, call us at 832-387-6194 and we’ll walk through it.
What else SB 1968 changed
The Broker Responsibility requirement is the piece with a deadline attached, but it came bundled with several others worth knowing.
- Broker Responsibility, every renewal
- Now required of all brokers, not only those supervising agents. It counts toward your 18-hour CE requirement.
- Required before licensure
- Broker license applicants must complete the course before the license is issued, not at first renewal.
- Affiliation reporting
- Associated brokers must identify the brokerages they associate with, and TREC displays it publicly on its website.
- Higher experience bar
- Minimum broker experience points rose from 360 to 720, with real estate education credit for a bachelor’s degree capped at 300 hours.

Taught by someone who has actually been the broker on the hook
Coach J spent fifteen years as a licensed Texas broker. She opened her own Houston brokerage in 2019 and grew it to 85 agents, then served as regional broker for eXp Realty’s coastal region.
She has written the policy manuals. She has done the supervision. She has answered for it when something went wrong.
This isn’t a compliance video you leave running in another tab. It’s six hours with someone who has carried the risk you’re being tested on.
