The real story behind building a successful brokerage in Houston — the wins, the mistakes, and the lessons that eventually led to the creation of Modern Agent Institute.
Explore MAI ProgramsWhen people hear that I built an 85-agent real estate team, they often assume it happened quickly. The reality is very different. Behind every milestone were years of learning, mistakes, leadership challenges, hiring struggles, and moments when I questioned whether growth was even possible.
Looking back, building that team became one of the most valuable experiences of my professional life. It taught me lessons that no book, seminar, or training program could fully prepare me for. More importantly, those lessons became the foundation for what would eventually become Modern Agent Institute.
Like many agents entering the business, I didn't begin with a huge marketing budget, a fancy office, or an existing network of agents ready to join my team.
What I did have was determination and a willingness to learn. Every client interaction became an opportunity to improve. Every challenge became a lesson.
In the early years, I handled almost everything myself. Prospecting, lead generation, client communication, marketing, transaction coordination—you name it, I was doing it.
At first, that felt productive. But eventually I realized something important: a business cannot scale if every decision depends on one person.
One of the biggest mistakes I made was hiring too quickly.
I believed that if I simply provided enough support and training, anyone could become successful. While training matters, I learned that attitude, commitment, and coachability matter just as much.
Not everyone wants the same level of growth. Some people want flexibility. Others want leadership opportunities. The key is finding people whose goals align with the culture you're building.
Today, I would spend far more time evaluating culture fit and long-term commitment before making hiring decisions.
For several years, growth felt chaotic. We were adding agents, serving more clients, and generating more business, but operations were becoming increasingly difficult to manage.
That's when I discovered the power of systems.
Once these systems were implemented, growth became much more predictable and sustainable.
Instead of constantly solving the same problems, we created processes that prevented those problems from occurring in the first place.
Many people believe leadership is about having all the answers.
What I learned is the opposite.
Great leaders ask better questions. They listen more. They focus on helping other people become successful rather than trying to be the smartest person in the room.
The stronger our agents became, the stronger our organization became.
Leadership stopped being about control and started becoming about empowerment.
Take more time to evaluate character, culture fit, and long-term goals before adding someone to the team.
Create systems before growth creates chaos. Documentation saves countless hours later.
Leaders should not become bottlenecks. Empower others to take ownership.
Consistent education creates consistent results and stronger professionals.
One thing that became clear as the team grew was that culture matters more than almost anything else.
When people share common values, communication improves, collaboration increases, and challenges become easier to overcome.
A strong culture creates momentum that systems alone cannot provide.
People don't just join organizations—they join missions, visions, and communities.
Many of the mistakes I made could have been avoided if I had access to better education and mentorship earlier in my career.
That's one of the biggest reasons Modern Agent Institute was created.
The goal isn't simply helping students pass an exam. The goal is helping future professionals build sustainable careers, develop confidence, and avoid many of the challenges that slow people down.
Everything we teach is rooted in real-world experience and lessons learned through years of building teams, serving clients, and growing businesses.
Building an 85-agent team wasn't the result of one strategy, one transaction, or one year of work.
It was the result of consistency, learning, adapting, failing, improving, and continuing to move forward.
If there's one lesson I'd share with every new agent, entrepreneur, or business leader, it's this:
Focus on serving people, investing in education, creating systems, and building relationships. Do those things well, and growth becomes a natural result.
Whether you're preparing for licensing, looking to grow your business, or ready to take the next step in your career, Modern Agent Institute can help you get there.
